5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Moving into a Van Full-Time
Vanlife looks dreamy on Instagram — and honestly, sometimes it is. But there’s a learning curve, and some of it hit me harder than expected. If you’re just starting out, here are 5 things I wish I’d known before going full-time on the road.
1. Space Isn’t the Problem – Stuff Is
It’s not the small space that gets you, it’s how much stuff you think you need. Downsizing was hard but freeing. Less really is more when your home has wheels.
What helped me:
Creating a “non-negotiables” list and storing everything else out of sight for a month. If I didn’t miss it, it didn’t come in the van.
2. Rainy Days Can Mess with Your Head
When it rains for three days straight and you’re stuck inside your tiny metal box… yeah, it can get to you. Always have a backup plan: audiobooks, offline shows, journals.
Tip:
Design a cozy corner with good lighting and a few “mental escape” tools – like books, downloaded podcasts, and playing cards.
3. Wi-Fi Is Never a Guarantee
Even the best mobile setups fail sometimes. Learn to work offline, or enjoy the moments when you can’t scroll endlessly.
What works for me:
I pre-download maps, and playlists. I also plan upload days where I find a library, cafe, or McDonald’s (never underestimate free Wi-Fi).
4. Solar Setups Are Everything
You can live without a fridge, but power is a non-negotiable. I underestimated how much I’d rely on charging gear. Invest in a proper solar setup early.
Lesson learned:
Don’t just go by wattage — track your actual usage over a few days and build your setup around that.
5. It’s Not Always Pretty — But It’s Worth It
Vanlife isn’t always beautiful, but it is always yours. The good, the rough, the breathtaking — it’s all part of the story.
Would I do it again? 100%. But now, I’d do it a little smarter — and hopefully help you do the same.
