Vanlife with a Dog
So you’ve got the van, the dream, and a four-legged copilot with a habit of stealing your seat. Sounds like the start of something great.
Traveling with a dog while living in a van is one of the best parts of vanlife. It’s also occasionally muddy, a bit chaotic, and full of tail-wagging adventure.
Whether you’ve already got a pup or are thinking of adopting one for the road, here’s what you should know.

🐾 1. Van Setup for Your Dog
Dogs need their own space too, even if it’s just a soft blanket shoved beside the handbrake.
Some things to consider:
- A comfy bed they can call their own
- Ventilation and airflow when parked
- Safe travel setup using a harness, crate, or a secure bed spot
- Easy access to water and shade
My dog (Ollie) can find the only sunbeam in the van in under three seconds. He’s basically solar-powered.
🥾 2. Exercise and Daily Routine
Even in the smallest spaces, dogs need mental and physical stimulation. That means regular walks, playtime, and sniffing everything they possibly can.
Top tip: build your travel days around their energy levels. A hyper dog in a tiny van is the definition of chaos.
Also, bring toys. More than you think. Then prepare to lose at least two under the driver’s seat.
🧼 3. Mud, Hair, and Other Realities
Your van will never be spotless again. Embrace the paw prints and the fluff or invest in a tiny vacuum and a lifetime supply of wet wipes.
Some dog vanlife hacks:
Use a small outdoor mat or towel to wipe paws
Have a designated dog towel (accept it will always be damp)
Keep treats handy to bribe them into cooperation
🐶 4. Vet Visits and Emergencies
Make sure your dog’s microchip, vaccinations, and insurance are up to date. Keep digital copies of their medical records just in case.
It’s also worth researching vets along your planned route or keeping a list of 24-hour clinics in each region.
Bonus tip: Dogs don’t always love unfamiliar places. Give them time and consistency where you can.
🌍 5. Dog-Friendly Destinations
Some national parks and beaches are super dog friendly. Others are not.
Before you roll up to that amazing forest trail, double-check if dogs are allowed. And always carry a lead, not just for rules, but for safety too.
🚐 Final Thoughts
Traveling with a dog in a van is messy, joyful, and incredibly rewarding. You’ll have a loyal adventure buddy, a great reason to get outside, and a very cute security system.
Just be ready to share your bed, your snacks, and probably your last clean sock.
Dogs don’t care about the destination. They just love the journey.
